Course programme

Course structure

Students engage in preparatory reading for weekly seminars, which offer opportunities for discussion. They may also be asked to present their ideas formally to fellow students. In addition, students are expected to work independently, reading around their subject, identifying relevant areas for further enquiry, and undertaking a small-scale research study. Students are supported through individual tutorials and the university's online virtual learning environment studentcentral.|

Areas of study

An introductory module investigates current issues in second language pedagogy. Three modules examine various aspects of applied linguistics, including the analysis of oral communication, second-language acquisition and varieties of English. Two further modules examine the theory and practice of English language teaching. Students also attend a series of workshops, seminars and presentations, delivered across the academic year, preparing them for work on their 15,000 word dissertation
