ENGLISH LITERATURE AS / A LEVEL
At Scarborough Sixth Form College, English Literature ia available as a one year AQA English Literature AS course and a two year English Literature A level course. AS level forms the first year of the A level course.

What and how will I be studying?
The study of English Literature at AS and A level is all about exploring the issues that have so fascinated writers during our long history, that they have created novels, plays and poems to express their thoughts and ideas. English Literature is all about relationships, love, sex, jealousy, ambition, power, corruption, conflict, violence, vice, horror and adventure. You will explore a range of novels, plays and poetry to discover what interests writers in different centuries, the methods they choose to communicate their stories and ideas, how they may be interpreted, the significance of their works, both when they were written and for later readers and audiences.

What skills will I need and be developing during the course?
You will need to enjoy reading and to be interested in how literature works. Students in other colleges may study a different selection of novels, plays and poetry because what is important about the study of English Literature is the skills that you learn rather than the particular books you study. By the end of this course we hope that you will have developed the skills of literary analysis you need to appreciate any work of literature and also the skills you need to be able to express your ideas convincingly, both orally and on paper.
