Course programme
English Literature
Exam Board: OCR
Additional Information: Students with a Grade C in either or both GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature or who have not had the opportunity to take GCSE English Literature will be considered as demand for places allows. You will also need an ability to write essays, a willingness to read and a fascination with the use of language in a variety of literary contexts. Students who are committed to a study of English at Degree Level may also wish to consider taking the AS in English Language for the first year before specialising in one or the other in year two.
COURSE OUTLINE
AS
You will be introduced to a range of post-1800 literary texts across the three modes of writing: drama, poetry and prose as well as having the opportunity to study books in relation to one another. A stimulating opportunity to extend your literary studies in a more mature context that will refine your reading and writing skills, develop your confidence and self-expression and raise your awareness of the cultural contexts of English literature. You will be expected to share ideas, contribute to group work or discussion and be willing to visit the theatre or places of literary interest.
A2
The A2 course extends the historical range of your reading across the three modes of writing to pre- 1800 texts including Shakespeare. You will also be encouraged to develop your understanding of literary genres through analysis and/or creative writing and to sharpen your critical response by making links and comparisons between texts of complementary form or theme. English Literature is a well-recognised A Level qualification for both employment and university.
