To introduce students to a broad range of literature from classical Greek drama to contemporary literature and film; to promote understanding of literary and film texts and contexts; to develop their reading and writing skills, as well as the ability to analyse, interpret and debate issues raised in literary and film texts; and to introduce key concepts in the study of literature and film.

Overview:
In the 2008 National Student Survey (NSS), English Studies at UCP Marjon ranked top 10 nationally for Personal Development, was among the best in the South West for Overall Satisfaction and outperformed the other local Plymouth institution in all categories.
Module Information:
1st year overview
Core introductory modules cover important ideas and movements in fiction, poetry, drama and film. During the year you should be able to develop your interests in particular periods and styles of literature.
2nd year overview
You can select from a range of modules which include: Shakespeare on film; Postcolonial literatures; Modern drama; Romanticism; Victorian literature; American fiction and Science fiction dystopias.
3rd year overview
You will select from a range of modules which include: Modern poetry; Shakespeare and Renaissance drama; American literature and film of the 1920s and 1930s; Representations of warfare and modernism.
You will also complete a dissertation on a subject of your choice.
Career Opportunities:
Many of our graduates go on to pursue careers in teaching, though English Literature is a degree that is valued highly by a range of other employers; English graduates are especially valued everywhere for their highly developed communication and analytical skills. Students have also forged careers in travel, journalism and writing.
