English Literature AS Level
This course introduces you to a detailed analysis of a range of literature.

What does the course involve?
The course will suit you if you enjoy not only reading but also analysing literature really closely. There is no doubt that your analytical and communication skills will develop considerably if you are successful on this course. The ability to read books independently is a crucial skill, however. There is a lot to read.

What will I study?
You will study a modern play (the Irish playwright Brian Friel's recent piece "Dancing at Lughnasa") and some contemporary poetry (Philip Larkin's "The Whitsun Weddings" and Dannie Abse's "Welsh Retrospective"). For the coursework, you will write a 1500 word essay comparing two novels, F.Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" and LP Hartley's "The Go-Between". In addition, you will have the opportunity to write a 750 word creative piece in a particular genre of your own choice, such as autobiographical writing or a short story, alongside a commentary evaluating your work. Throughout the year, you will discuss your own interpretations in class and develop your essay writing skills. When you take the exam in the summer, you will be allowed to take your books into the exam room but you can't write any notes on them.
