Is this subject right for me?
If your first language is not English, you will be offered an ESOL course. This is usually an alternative to English GCSE, and so is studied alongside other AS, A or GCSE subjects. Diagnostic testing will be carried out to ensure that you are placed on an appropriate course. In general, prospective students need an IELTS score of 5.5 for A/AS Level programme, or an IELTS score of 4.5 for a GCSE programme course content
Course Content
In your class, you†ll have the opportunity for discussions and development of study and exam techniques, as well as support in improving your language skills. The emphasis of the course is on you developing strong academic skills to prepare you for your future University studies.
Other Support
You will also be offered one-to-one or small group sessions with an ESOL teacher to help you with the language involved with your other subjects. This is particularly helpful in subjects which require a lot of reading and/or coursework
ESOL Examinations
Students are entered on courses which prepare them to take the IELTS academic test â€" the qualification required by UK universities as evidence of competence in English for Higher Education study. Students are also entered for Skills for Life examinations levels one and two.
Information, help and advice is also offered for students who wish to take other external ESOL/EFL exams such as Cambridge FCE, Advanced and TOEFL.
Intensive ESOL Classes

English, Information Technology and Mathematics
All courses will have lessons in citizenship for people who are eligible to apply for a UK passport.

Courses with less than 16 hours per week from September to June have been designed to provide intensive English, IT and Maths for the local community, including asylum seekers, refugees, and people from other EU countries. You can join these classes from September. Applications received by 30th June will be given priority over later applications.

Course content:
  • 8 lessons every week of general English covering Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening
  • 3 lessons IT including Word, Access and Excel
  • 1 lesson of Maths
  • Tutorial support
  • Extensive work on grammar and pronunciation
  • Language Centre and Learning Centre available for self-study

You will be assessed in your Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening skills at a level appropriate to your needs.

Nationally recognised qualifications, including Skills for Life exams will be taken at the end of your course in ESOL, IT and Maths.
