Course Summary:
Delivered in years 10 and 11; this qualification has been developed by City & Guilds (the Awarding Body) for candidates wishing to gain some understanding and practical experience of the variety of trades in the Construction Industry.
The qualification has 5 units across 4 trade areas: Carpentry & Joinery, Painting, Brickwork and Plastering.

Course programme

Course Content: The qualification covers the following practical construction skills: Basic health & safety, tool and hand-skills in Carpentry & Joinery, Painting, Brickwork and Plastering. Constructing timber halving joints. Constructing timber housing joints. Constructing half-brick thick walling. Various techniques in painting & decorating. Preparing backgrounds and applying render coats. Students that complete units early will be given the opportunity to undertake extension work in that trade area in the form of more challenging level 1 units. How will I be assessed? To gain this qualification, learners must successfully complete the following unit assessments: Unit 001: Halving Joints - internally assessed. Unit 002: Housing Joints - internally assessed. Unit 003: Painting Techniques - internally assessed. Unit 005: Half-Brick Walls - internally assessed. Unit 008: Rendering - internally assessed. For every unit there is a formal assessment and each assessment contains a practical task and, in some cases, a second task in the form of some knowledge questions. Learners who complete any 3 units will receive the E3 Award. All 5 units must be completed to receive the E3 Certificate. Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required? Safety overalls and steel toe-capped boots. (NB. overalls must be purchased through Derby College). What can I do after this course? Upon completion of the qualification and depending on the grades achieved, learners may wish to progress on to: A level 1 Certificate or Diploma in Construction Skills. Alevel 1 Certificate or Diploma in a specific vocational trade area.
