Environment, Society and Sustainability is a new degree which directly focuses on the challenging and complex interrelationships between human societies and the environment. We have become increasingly aware of the impact of modern society on the natural world and the potential consequences of human actions. From global warming to ozone depletion; from the over-exploitation of our forests and oceans to the disposal of toxic waste; from the pollution of rivers and lakes to the loss of biodiversity, these impacts have direct ramifications for the social, political and economic sustainability of our societies. It is increasingly recognised that contemporary environmental challenges can only be adequately understood and resolved by taking a multidisciplinary perspective. This view provides the rationale for our unique degree which draws on key disciplines within the social and environmental sciences. These include: Sociology, Geography, Ecology, Political Science, Philosophy and Economics. Students interested in these issues and disciplines will find themselves supported by a passionate academic staff team who are committed to educating people about environmental sustainability.
