Course programme
This four-year course follows a similar structure to the MSci Environmental Sciences, but with an additional year of study at an overseas university during the third year. The first year of study employs core compulsory modules to establish your knowledge on essential topics. You will have the chance to select from optional modules in the second and final years in order to allow you to direct your own studies. In the final year you will also have the opportunity to undertake an independent research project on a subject of your choice and undertake Master’s level modules.
Year 1A series of compulsory modules introduce you to the general scientific principles governing our environment, including Global Environmental Challenges and Understanding the Dynamic Planet. Multi-disciplinary modules allow you to develop the essential analytical skills you will need during further years – including skills for fieldwork and for research; Maths for Scientists; and Sustainability, Society and Biodiversity.
Year 2As the course progresses you are given greater freedom to tailor your course around your own interests, choosing from a wide variety of modules, from Geodynamics to Hydrology.
Year 3 (Year Abroad)After maintaining a good standard of academic performance during your first two years, you will spend your third year studying at one of university exchange partners in Australasia, New Zealand, North America or Europe. We take into account your field of interest and placement preferences, and do our best to place you at the university of your choice. See the “Study Abroad” information below for more details.
Year 4Your final year of study focuses on a substantial individual research project, allowing you to investigate a specialist area in professional depth. You will also study a range of advanced Master’s level modules in Environmental Science and its wider social context.
