" Environmental Engineering MEng/BEng (Hons) OVERVIEW

This course can be studied as:

  • MEng: 4 years full-time; 5 years sandwich (study abroad or work placement)
  • BEng: : 3 years full-time; 4 years sandwich (study abroad or work placement)
  • Environmental engineers use core engineering skills and a deep understanding of scientific, numerical and management principles to assess, prevent and control natural and man-made environmental disasters.

    WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

The Environmental Engineering course has been designed to meet the needs of niche and highly specialised national and international markets, tailored to the requirements of an integrated civil and environmental engineering sector.

You will study subjects that can give you the necessary skills to assess, analyse and manage the natural and man-made impacts and risks on the built environment. In addition, the course aims to train you in decision-making to protect the built-environment and to initiate and lead on sustainable development.

If you choose this course you may benefit from:

    • Environmental engineering knowledge and understanding to make the most of existing and emerging factors and technology.
    • The ability to apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to the analysis and solution of environmental engineering problems.
    • An understanding of the environmental engineering industry, regulation, organisation and roles, and technical and commercial management skills.
    • Studying with students on a wide range of courses covering other professional disciplines in an integrated school of energy, construction and environment which reflects the modern interdisciplinary nature of construction projects.
    • A teaching team who are active in research andhave industrial experience, who bring their expertise into their teaching to ensure it is relevant to the needs of industry.
    • Use of the unique Coventry University Construction Simulation Centre; as well as guest lectures, laboratory and fieldwork and local and overseas field trips.
    WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Our MEng/BEng Environmental Engineering degrees begin with a firm foundation of maths, environmental science and core civil engineering skills such as laboratory, analytical and design skills. This will provide knowledge and understanding of hydraulics, geo-technics, environmental pollution prevention and control, nuclear and renewable energy as well as structural analysis, design and materials. These will provide knowledge and skills on hydrology, modelling and water engineering, geo-environmental technics, energy, environmental management and audit.

The MEng/BEng courses include group projects with inter/multidisciplinary activates at each stage, using appropriate environmental and humanitarian engineering with computer and field simulations as well as building information modelling (BIM). The students will gain an insight into the full breadth of technology to minimise the socio-economic and environmental impacts by collaborating with the other students with inter/multi-disciplinary skills. The individual project also improves the research and innovation skills.

The Stage 4 (year 4) is only for the MEng students and they will further specialise in:

    • Environmental Risk Assessment and Management
    • Environmental Hazards Management Techniques
    • Water and Wastewater Treatment Techniques
    • Water, Sanitation and Shelter Technologies
    • Structural Failure Analysis and Design
HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

Your course will be based on a series of lectures, with associated tutorials, workshops, lab and fieldwork. In addition, you will be assigned a personal tutor who will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.

You will work with staff on real-world problems from industry, commerce and research groups, as you would in professional practice; this means that you can develop professional skills at the same time as you learn the technical content of your degree.

    HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: formal examinations 40%; coursework, tests, essays 10%; practical or project work 20%; group work etc. 20%; presentations, posters etc. 10%.

A compulsory Add+vantage module must also be completed, please see page 21 for more details.

    TEACHING CONTACT HOURS

In a typical week you will have up to 20 contact hours of teaching and this will break down as:

Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 4 hours of practical work (laboratory or field work) and 2 hours of tutorials (individual or group projects) each week.

Medium group teaching: 6 hours of tutorials each week.

Large group teaching: 8 hours of lectures each week.

Personal study: 20 hours each week studying and revising in your own time – including some guided study using handouts, online activities, etc.
