ESOL ENGLISH FOR BUSINESS (LEVEL 1+)
Entry Requirements
Good knowledge of English (Intermediate / Level
1 or above).
Description
This short course is designed for
overseas businesspeople, students of Business Studies or students with an
interest in the language of business. It aims to promote effective spoken
and written communication in Business English, and an understanding of
British Business Culture.
Course Content
Topic Areas:
The
course will be tailor-made to suit the requirements of students.
Sample
themes may include:
- Exchanging information on jobs, responsibilities,
products and services
- Telephone communication (making arrangements,
exchanging information)
- Problem solving (making suggestions,
considering possibilities, negotiating solutions)
- Dealing with
visitors (polite formulae, phrases for expressing interest, awareness of
cultural differences)
- Business meetings (expressing opinion, checking
understanding).
Language Focus:
Guidance on the following will
be provided:
- Register: establishing the appropriate tone for verbal
and written communication
- Idiomatic expressions, irony and
understatement.
Skills Focus:
Emphasis will be placed primarily
on oral communication and listening comprehension, with reading and
writing skills as appropriate.
Frequent use will be made of role-plays
and conversation-based activities, designed to help students to relate the
language being studied to their own experience in the workplace.
After
completing this course you should be able to:
- Communicate more
effectively in the workplace, with colleagues and customers, both orally
and in writing
- Listen effectively to obtain information about varied
work tasks
- Demonstrate greater understanding of the British Business
Culture.
Where a course is aimed towards an assessment/examination, it
is expected that all students will enter for the qualification.
Method
of Assessment
There is no external assessment, but students will
receive a Certificate of Achievement.
Progression
This course
is self-contained, or it may lead to a further short course if students
desire, in which further topic areas will be covered.

You will be asked to provide yourself with the course
book(s) advised by your tutor.
