The Nationality Regulations for ESOL courses changed on 7 April 2010. If you want to demonstrate your knowledge of language and life with an ESOL qualification, you must now meet the following requirements: You must have attended your ESOL course at an accredited college. The course must have included citizenship materials derived from the document 'Citizenship Materials for ESOL Learners' (ISBN: 1-84478-5424). You must have obtained a relevant ESOL qualification from an approved awarding body. You must demonstrate that you have made relevant progress. Suitable for: Anybody wishing to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain and British Citizenship

The ESOL Certificate is awarded by City & Guilds; a UKBA approved awarding body for ESOL with Citizenship.

Background of the courseThe ESOL with Citizenship course was started in 2007 for those seeking to attain British Citizenship and Indefinite Leave to Remain. It was started in order to help seekers demonstrate their English skills and knowledge of life in the United Kingdom. The course was specifically designed for learners whose English adequacy was below Entry-Level 3.

It was made compulsory in April 2010 to achieve the ESOL with Citizenship qualification from a UKBA accredited and approved institute only.

What happens next?Successful completion of the ESOL with Citizenship course will allow and enable the learner to apply for Settlement in the UK or to gain British Nationality.
