Course programme

This Designated degree allows students to study French, German and Spanish throughout the three years of the degree programme. In each of the three years students devote at least three-quarters of their time to language study, while the remaining part is devoted to aspects of modern European and Latin American culture, relevant to their three languages.

Programme Structure & Content

In first, second and third year students take the same language courses as those being followed by intending Honours students.

Students are normally expected to spend one month residence in each of the three countries whose language they are studying.

Teaching & Assessment

All of the Departments' language courses are taught in small groups, while literature and culture courses are taught by a combination of lectures and small group tutorials. Courses in first and second year are normally assessed by end-of-course examination, but in some courses (excluding beginners' courses), good coursework can lead to exemption from the examinations. In third year literature and culture courses are examined by continuous assessment or end-of-course examination.

Additional information

Career opportunities: Students who have completed a Designated degree in European Languages go on to a wide variety of careers. In some of these they make direct use of their foreign-language skills in, for example, teaching, export, or the tourist industry, while in others they use the more generally applicable communicative, analytical and organisational skills which they have acquired through the study of languages and cultures. Many of these careers offer the opportunity to work abroad, in Europe and beyond.
