Course content

What will you study on the BSc European Nursing (Adult)?

You will learn a range of essential nursing skills and techniques to effectively care for adult patients in a variety of healthcare environments. Problem solving and making critical decisions will become second nature, and you will become confident working collaboratively in teams; ensuring you are able to assess, plan and implement adult care effectively. You will gain a detailed understanding of the ongoing development of nursing as a profession and be confident in contributing to the debate about its future.

Through taking this nursing route you will gain greater understanding of pan European health problems, particularly related to deployment of health personnel and trends in health and social care. We encourage collaboration and exchange of ideas in terms of clinical and educational research, to inform your studies and wider career development.

You will spend seven months studying and learning at a partner university in another European country (subject to availability): Satakunta University of Applied Sciences (Pori, Finland), University of Firenze (Florence, Italy), University of Malta (Malta) and University College Lillebælt (Odense, Denmark); and on return you will complete their dissertation module and final 12-week sign-off period of practice in London.

You will become an independent, self-motivated practitioner, able to reflect on your practice and adopt a critical and analytical approach to the care of adult patients.

Modules

Year 1

Foundations for Field of Practice (30 credits) - Compulsory

This module begins to develop the skills required to become a graduate, autonomous and lifelong learner. It provides a foundation from which the identified skills can be developed in relation to the field of nursing practice. These skills will be studied throughout the student s programme and beyond, in the world of work. In addition, this module will specifically introduce the principles of adult nursing theory and practice.

Foundations for Nursing Practice (30 credits) - Compulsory

This module aims to equip you with the knowledge in essential biological concepts and evidence based nursing skills. Essential biological concepts included are human anatomy and physiology, microbiology / infection control, and pharmacology. Evidence based nursing skills encompass those shown in the syllabus, and introduces medicines management. It provides a foundation from which you can build and develop your nursing practice throughout the programme and you’re your professional career.

Foundations for Professional Practice (30 credits) - Compulsory

This module provides a foundation from which you can develop the appropriate knowledge, skills, attitudes and conduct necessary for working as a professional nurse. These skills and attributes will be studied and developed throughout the programme and into your professional career.

Practice Learning 1 (30 credits) - Compulsory

This module is practice based and provides a variety of practice experiences in line with the NMC requirements for registration. You will build on the knowledge and skills developed in previous modules and be supported in meeting the generic and specific field standards for competence and Essential Skills Clusters to achieve the NMC criteria for progression point 1.

Year 2

Approaches to Health and Social Care Research (30 credits) - Compulsory

This module aims to introduce the process of health care research. It is a professional requirement for those working in health-related disciplines to underpin knowledge with research and evidence-based practice. Professionals need to be able to access research findings, and through an understanding of the research process and methodology, be able to critique research and apply this knowledge to practice. The aim of this module is to develop your awareness of the research process and to equip you with the skills required to research in the subject area appropriate to the target award and to offer some preparation for the final year project/ dissertation.

Caring for Patients with Long Term Conditions (30 credits) - Compulsory

This module aims to prepare you to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for adults with long term conditions. You will be facilitated to develop knowledge and skills in preparation for the care of adults with long term needs. Issues of diversity and patterns of health and illness will be explored. The module will enable you to recognise and manage communication needs across the lifespan and in a range of settings.

Nursing the Acutely Ill Patient (30 credits) - Compulsory

This module aims to prepare you to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for the acutely ill. You will be facilitated to build on theoretical, clinical and personal knowledge to provide holistic care using an evidence based approach considering the underpinning legal and ethical issues. The factors impacting on safe decision making will be explored. The module will address key professional issues that impact on both patient care and the role of the nurse in the acute setting.

Practice Learning 2 (30 credits) - Compulsory

This module provides a range of practice learning opportunities across a variety of practice experiences in line with the NMC requirements for registration. You will build on the knowledge and skills developed in Year 1 and be supported in meeting the generic and specific field standards for competence to progress towards the achievement of the NMC criteria for progression point 2.

Year 3

Dissertation (30 credits) - Compulsory

This module aims to synthesise learning from the programme providing an opportunity for you to study independently and investigate a topic in depth. It fosters academic curiosity, an inquiry based approach, and the employment and application of research skills thus facilitating the development of a higher level of theorising. You will select a topic of personal interest you wish to study further and manage your own learning during this module, with the support of an allocated supervisor for this period of independent study.

European Approaches to Complex Care in Adult Nursing (30 credits) – Compulsory

The aim of this module is to prepare you to manage the care of a patient with complex care needs in a variety of health care settings. It will help you appreciate the nature of complex care needs and to comprehensively assess, plan and deliver care that is evidence based. This within the context of interprofessional team working and the organisation of care within countries across Europe.

European Placement Nursing (15 credits) – Compulsory

This is practice experience in the clinical areas in the host country – it is a minimum of 10 practice weeks in a wide variety of settings to practice skills and care and you will be given the opportunity to gain insight of the local health care system and be supported in the delivery of care to patients/clients with varying needs related to their field of practice.

Lifestyle, Culture and Health (15 credits) – Compulsory

This module aims to introduce the culture and lifestyle of the host country. It will provide you with an understanding and insight of the host culture and healthcare practice / systems and how these impact on health beliefs and values. A broader appreciation of the host culture and lifestyle will develop your understanding of a culturally sensitive approach to care.

Nursing in Europe (15 credits) – Compulsory

This module aims to provide the opportunities to enhance your current knowledge and understanding, in relation to legal, ethical, socio-cultural , political and economic processes that impact upon the organisation and delivery of care in the various fields of nursing practice, across the host countries.

Practice Learning 3 (30 credits) - Compulsory

This module provides a range of practice learning opportunities across a variety of practice experiences in line with the NMC requirements for registration. You will consolidate the knowledge and skills developed to date and be supported in meeting the generic and specific field standards for competence to achieve the NMC criteria for registration. You will be assessed by a sign-off mentor during the 12-week period of continuous practice.

You can find more information about this course in the programme specification. Optional modules are usually available at levels 5 and 6, although optional modules are not offered on every course. Where optional modules are available, you will be asked to make your choice during the previous academic year. If we have insufficient numbers of students interested in an optional module, or there are staffing changes which affect the teaching, it may not be offered. If an optional module will not run, we will advise you after the module selection period when numbers are confirmed, or at the earliest time that the programme team make the decision not to run the module, and help you choose an alternative module.
