Course programme

The role of a senior Executive Assistant is to provide a dynamic, efficient and fully professional service. This important and key role is both demanding and challenging and, will require confidence, accountability, flexibility as well as highly effective communication and interpersonal skills. The individual must be highly organised and have the ability to co-ordinate multiple priorities within demanding and tight timescales. The PA at this level has management responsibilities with the highest standards of integrity; is one step ahead and has the ability to effectively organise others.

The executive assistant will need to have advanced IT skills and the use of shorthand with accounting are excellent skills that will give you the extra advantage in securing the role that is highly valued, well paid, interesting and rewarding.

The Pitman Training Executive Plus Diploma will give you excellent skills to take you to the top. You will learn up to date Microsoft Office applications, get up to speed with the latest accounting packages and learn the more traditional secretarial skills including touch-typing and shorthand. In addition, you can enhance your business skills through one day seminars and specific professional training giving you everything you will need to excel in this role.

  • Learn how to touch type accurately, using the correct keyboard technique. This may help to reduce the risk of RSI (repetitive strain injury).

Keyboard Speed Development

  • Develop your typing speed to improve productivity using graded copying exercises and timed dictations. A number of stages are available, taking you up to a speed of 70 wpm.

Effective Business Communication

  • Learn how to communicate effectively in business by letter, email, telephone and presentation. This will cover correct use of grammar, punctuation, principles of letter writing and CV writing.

  • Develop skills and understanding of routine and complex business documents and the conventions used in their production and presentation.

Audio Transcription

  • Learn audio typing techniques to produce business documents to a high degree of accuracy and skill.

Microsoft Word

  • Learn word processing skills to a good business standard. This will enable you to create professional looking documents, produce tables, insert pictures and much more.

Microsoft Word Expert

  • Learn advanced word processing skills including mailmerge, creating graphs, creating and running macros, creating an index, table of contents and more.

Microsoft Excel

  • Learn spreadsheet skills to a good business standard. This course will enable you to create a spreadsheet, enter data, formulas and functions; create charts and more.

Microsoft Excel Expert

  • Learn advanced spreadsheet skills, covering areas such as importing and exporting data, creating and using templates, linking workbooks, data management, using analysis tools and pivot tables.

Microsoft PowerPoint

  • Gain competency in creating slide presentations. Areas covered include formatting, inserting tables, pictures, sound and hyperlinks; applying transition and timing effects.

Microsoft Outlook

  • Learn how to share, manage and schedule information electronically. Covers the use of email, electronic calendar, scheduling meetings and appointments; creating and assigning tasks and creating address lists.

Microsoft Access

  • Develop database skills from initial design stage. Covers the creation of tables, reports, queries and forms, relationships, wizards and more.

Microsoft Publisher

  • Learn desktop publishing skills to create various publications, inserting text, pictures, frames and tables.

Dreamweaver

  • Learn to create a website using the most popular industry standard web design program, inserting text, images, adding backgrounds, creating links and anchors, creating tables and creating frame sets.

Introduction to HTML

  • Learn to create a website using the programming language HTML (hypertext mark-up language).

Basic Book-keeping

  • Gain a clear understanding of the basic principles of book-keeping. Learn how to maintain a cash book, petty cash books and reconcile a bank statement.

Purchase Ledger

  • Become proficient at maintaining a manual purchase ledger.

Sales Ledger

  • Become proficient at maintaining a manual sales ledger.

Final Accounts I

  • Learn the principles of double-entry book-keeping in order to maintain a nominal ledger and extract a preliminary trial balance.

Final Accounts II

  • Learn how to extend the trial balance in order to prepare the final accounts of a business (profit and loss accounts and balance sheet).

Manual and Computerised Payroll (Sage QuickPay)

  • Learn about the Tax (PAYE) and Social Insurance (PRSI) processes required by the Irish Revenue Commissioners. These techniques can then be applied to both a manual or computerised system. In this course you will also convert your manual payroll skills to computerised payroll using Sage QuickPay, one of the most popular software programs.

Sage Line 50

  • Convert your manual book-keeping skills to computerised accounts using the most popular software.

Numeric Data Entry

  • Learn correct and efficient use of the numeric keypad.

Optional Subject(s)

  • Teeline or Pitman 2000 Shorthand
  • Learn the complete theory of either shorthand system. This will enable you to take notes at speeds of up to 70 wpm.
