Introduction:
This course covers intermediate theoretical and practical elements that are essential for planning, preparing and delivering safe, effective, professional exercise and fitness sessions.

Study Mode & Location:
This one year Part-Time+ course will be held at Preston College, Fulwood Campus, St Vincent`s Road, Preston, PR2 8UR.

Course Content:
This programme will include a mixture of theoretical and practical elements within each qualification offered:

  • Gym Instructor Certificate (Central YMCA Qualification Level 2)
  • Circuit Instructor Certificate (Central YMCA Qualification Level 2)
  • NVQ2 Exercise and Fitness.


Classroom lectures will cover the theoretical aspects which include principles of training, Anatomy and Physiology, Customer Care, Promoting Regular Physical Activity, First Aid and Health & Safety.

Assessment:
Assessments will be carried out by observing and questioning students undertaking practical work. Some aspects will be covered by simulated tasks and assignments. Some units also have mandatory written papers. All assessments are carried out during the course.

As the assessment process becomes more familiar, students will be able to take control in the planning of their own assessments together with the development of a portfolio, which will contain evidence of work. Candidates are responsible for providing a participant for the final practical assessment.

The assessor will observe students working, and assess their performance against national standards. As a student, you will be asked to undertake particular activities in a work related environment. There will also be end of unit tests, examination of theory and the final external assessment of practical work.

Careers & Progression Opportunities:
This course will provide a sound foundation for employment/self employment within the expanding fitness industry, such as teaching and instructing activities in the gym. Alternatively students can progress onto a CYQ level 3 Personal Trainer Award.

Additional Costs: You will need to purchase a t-shirt, sweatshirt and 3 course manuals at a cost of £70.

How To Apply
You will need to complete a Further Education Application Form. These will be available from mid-May.
Many courses have limited places so please return your application form as soon as possible. Following acceptance of your application, the earliest you may enrol is mid-June.
