This foundation degree course has been specifically designed to equip learners with the skills and knowledge to work within the growing health and fitness industry.

What will I be learning?

This course provides the opportunity to achieve vocational qualifications alongside a main course of study including: central YMCA qualifications ( CYQ )Gym Instructor Award ; First Aid at work; Diploma in sports therapy; and GP referral diploma (Wright Foundation).
The units studied are: Year one - professional development; human anatomy and physiology; fundamentals of training and fitness; exercise and lifestyle; exercise prescription; exercise for specific populations; professional vocational study; work based learning.
Year two - exercise physiology; nutrition and exercise; remedial and exercise rehabilitation; research and statistics for sports and exercise sciences; exercise and health psychology; health promotion and fitness.

How will I learn?

Your performance in each module will be assessed through a combination of coursework and end of module examination. You will be assessed through a variety of methods which may include essays, exams, portfolio work, presentations, case studies, work based learning, practical assessment and report writing. You will be given assessment criteria in each case, which are used to judge the extent of your achievement.
Modules are introduced through briefings, discussions, practical workshops and seminars. Seminars and critiques encouraging group interaction, critical reflection, evaluation and presentation punctuate project work. The programme is assignment-based and requires a large amount of independent study and research activities. Learners will undertake in-depth reading on all subject areas. Course work is assessed at the end of every module and an indicative grade is given on all assignments. Progress reports are provided during tutorials.

What else might I want to know?

A lot more money has been put into exercise science by the government. This course will open many new employment opportunities for students.

What can I do afterwards?

After you have successfully completed the foundation degree you may progress to the final year of the health and fitness honours degree course, or to other appropriate honours degree programmes at the University of Plymouth. You could also go straight into employment as a specialist GP referral exercise and fitness practitioner; personal trainer; health and fitness manager; fitness and exercise community development officer; health promotion officer; gym instructor or sports and exercise therapist.
