o Statutory Registration. From 2005 it will be compulsory for all trainee dental nurses to be registered on a dental nursing training course in order for them to continue working as a dental nurse.

National Certificate or NVQ?

The National Certificate for dental nurses was up until 2000 the only nationally recognised qualification for dental nurses. The awarding body is the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses.
The National Certificate is:

o 1 year course.
o 2 intakes per year. (January & July)
o 100% exam based (consisting of a written paper, practical, oral & instrument identification)
o Exam held in a London Hospital every May & November
o Tempdents National Certificate pass rate has been between 82%-96% for the past 3 years. Two of our students were awarded the gold & silver award by the NEBDN for achieving the highest 2007 National Certificate exam results in the country. A Tempdent student was also awarded the silver award in 2006.

The Oral Health Care Level 3 NVQ is a more vocationally centred qualification. Tempdent is one of the forerunners in delivering this newer qualification, and we have consequently developed many tried & tested learning methods to help you achieve the qualification. The awarding body for the NVQ is City & Guilds.
The Oral Health Care NVQ level 3 is:

o 18 - 24 month course
o 2 intakes per year (March & September)
o Free to all under 25 year olds (non overseas students only)
o In order to achieve the NVQ qualification you must build up a Portfolio of evidence, sit a written exam called the VRQ (written exam) & achieve keyskills level 2 in numeracy & application of number.
o You will be allocated your own assessor who, along with your tutor will guide you through the NVQ.
o Your assessor will regularly observe you in your workplace, and will assess your skills as a dental nurse within actual live clinical procedures.
o Portfolio building. Your assessor will guide you on how to build a portfolio of evidence, which needs to be completed in order for you to achieve your qualification.
o VRQ is the written examination and is held 3 times a year at Tempdent (every March, June & December)
o Tempdents Independent Assessment pass rate stands at 96% (May 04)

Temp Dent Course Timetable for 2008/2009
