Shirley Williams
Tutor
I am a retired Art and Design F.E. lecturer and although, I originally trained in Fine Art and Ceramics, I am now a textile artist who teaches occasional Textile and Craft courses. Over the years I have gained a great deal of experience and I enjoy passing my skills and enthusiasm on to others with a love of crafts and often they find a new skill or pastime.

What will the course cover and how will it be taught?
1. Introduction to materials and equipment including health and safety issues.
2. Examine examples and discuss possible starting points and outcomes –each student will work on their own ideas and at their own pace.
3. Demonstration of techniques –drawing out and cutting stencils, making simple printing blocks, apply colour to the blocks, transferring colour to fabrics, pattern repeats, finishing and fixing.
4. Learners start work, firstly drawing and cutting own stencil, making a printing block and then applying colour to fabric. Some learners may make several prints by the end of the day.
5. End of course review –display of all work and discussing what has been achieved as well as ideas for further work at home. Your tutor will discuss the course content with the class and may make some adjustments to the syllabus based on the needs of the group. They will also try to accommodate individual requirements where it is practical to do so. This is essentially a practical, hands-on course and you will acquire skills by trying tasks out for yourself, but you will also have access to illustrations and course notes as well as demonstrations of the tasks involved and the one to one support of the tutor. You will be able to see how you are getting on, and get further ideas, by discussion with the tutor and by looking at, and discussing, your fellow students work.
