Content

Fashion is a fast moving and highly diverse international industry with a wide range of markets and creative communication and production practices. It takes hard work, flexibility and passion to succeed.

The BA Fashion course at Central Saint Martins has earned a national and international reputation for producing innovative and highly creative designers and fashion communicators who have gone on to make outstanding and directional contributions within a variety of fashion professions in the UK and abroad.

Our philosophy is to provide a learning environment in which innovation, invention and originality can be developed. It springs from the belief that for fashion graduates to contribute effectively in a climate of change in the new millennium, they need to be versatile fashion specialists. They will need to possess a breadth of knowledge and critical understanding of the professional fashion environment.

Structure

The course runs for 90 weeks full time over three years, and is divided into three Levels, (or Stages) each lasting 30 weeks.

The core study is the understanding of Fashion Design; this is studied at different levels. Throughout the course you will be provided with the opportunity to participate in group or team projects that bring together students from the different specialist pathways of BA Fashion and occasionally some of the design disciplines of other courses.

Stage 1

This Stage provides a foundation in the generation and development of design ideas through practical/technical workshops, grounded in the unique aspects of your chosen pathway and an introduction to related course pathways. An important function of this Stage is to encourage you to research, explore and develop your individual strengths and approaches to your subject.

Stage 2

The second Stage takes you into your pathway in depth, allowing you to develop a variety of approaches, by demanding individual and experimental responses, and promoting the discipline required by professional practice. Through a combination of studio and formal tutorial guidance, seminar, lectures, external projects and competitions, project critiques, personal research, independent study and team projects, you explore the breadth of your subjects and develop your individual talents in relation to them. During this Stage you will benefit from the learning experience gained from assisting the final year students in the preparation of work for the degree shows.

You may also have the opportunity to go abroad (at your own cost) during this year to visit trade shows or fashion collections relevant to your field of study.

At the beginning of the summer term, students on the four-year sandwich study mode are involved in the planning and preparation for their work placement.

Stage 3

The focus of this final Stage is on the further development of your individuality and independence as you initiate, develop and complete your final degree project. Your course work enables you to locate and explore your design/communication interests and identify areas of your work that may require further attention or focus as you develop your degree project/collection proposal.

In the summer term you complete your degree work for examination. As part of this process you will participate in an assessment presentation of collections, that normally takes the form of a fashion show. You will also show your work in a degree examination exhibition at this time.

Dedication

4 years, full-time, sandwich study.
