Course programme

This part lecture, part on the streets, trend forecasting course takes you from the history of trends through to the techniques behind spotting key looks. It concludes with a day in some of the most inspirational parts of London where you can test your eye with some trend spotting of your own.

You will visit a fashion/art exhibition and look through archives of fashion images, learning how to use a range of primary sources and digital tools to collect information surrounding trends and popular culture. You will use the famous LCF fashion library - one of the most comprehensive fashion libraries in Europe.

There will be visits to some of London’s most iconic stores to analyse visual merchandising, the power of the consumer and its impact on building brands. You will also explore the city’s most interesting fashion hotspots, including Soho and East London, to observe real and current trends in the most fashionable and influential areas of London.

The course will include:

  • Where do trends come from – both macro and micro levels
  • Key historical and modern day trends
  • Co-incidence or trend?
  • Who are the trendsetting designers?
  • Street trends and their influence
  • Accessories, footwear and beauty trends
  • Blogs
  • Fashion calendar influences - trade fairs to catwalks
  • How the high street interprets and re-imagines trends
