It also examines the roles and responsibilities of major organisations associated with airline and airport operations and management.

Aviation Travel Geography
Exploring the relationship between aviation, geography and tourism, this module focuses on the location of key gateway airports in Europe and worldwide. You will also gain an insight into the terminology associated with airport operations and develop knowledge of the basic principles of aviation meteorology. This module provides an overview of Europe and the geographical setting for commercial aviation management.

Business Environment
This module looks at the environment in which aviation businesses operate, and how external factors influence the growth and development of airlines and airports. It explores emerging national and international issues to help you understand the framework in which commercial aviation functions, and the context in which managers make decisions.

Legislative Frameworks
This module gives you an insight into the legislation affecting commercial aviation. It focuses on the dual aspects of contract and consumer protection law. You will also analyse negligence, service provider and employer liability law, and the legal system, and how they apply to the industry.

Personal and Professional Development for Managers
This module gives you a better understanding of the development of your commercial aviation management career. It also provides you with the skills to be a more effective learner.

Management Information
This module provides a foundation in accounting and statistics in the airline and airport sector, and their role in the decision-making process. It includes essential concepts and practical applications, and encourages a critical approach. It also prepares you for Year Two (Level 5) studies in Management Accounting and Decision Making.

Year two (Level 5) modules summaries

Airline and Airport Issues
Here we examine a range of contemporary airline and airport industry issues, reviewing changing operational characteristics and procedures in the commercial aviation sector, and the impact of new technologies and innovations. Building on what you will have learned in Introduction to Airline and Airport Management, this module allows you to develop practical, work-related industry skills.

Airline and Airport Operations Management
This module introduces you to a range of skills, techniques and operational practices relevant to the aviation industry. Its multi-disciplinary approach draws on a range of competencies developed in airlines, airports and the business sector. You will manage your own virtual airline, including maintaining aircraft, scheduling, staffing and setting of fares, access to lounges, transfer requests, in-flight meal allocation and providing entertainment systems.

Aviation Information Technology
An introduction to e-commerce, this module examines its development and impact on the commercial aviation sector. You will look at the opportunities and benefits e-commerce offers airlines and airport operators and the legislative issues surrounding this technology, and critically appraise airline and airport websites through interactive tutorials and formal lectures.

Management Accounting and Decision Making
This module builds on what you will have learned in the Management Information module. It combines management accounting, statistics and the key project management techniques of network diagrams, and time and cost analysis. Management Accounting addresses important techniques in the industry, and stresses the ability to report the outcomes of analysis in planning, control and decision-making. The statistical element of this module concentrates on the analysis of bivariate data, and its application to all aspects of business including accounting, HR and marketing.

Sales and Marketing
This module introduces you to the factors that influence airport and airline consumer behaviour, together with the concepts and principles of marketing management.

Managing People in Practice
Here we introduce you to the essential knowledge and understanding you need to manage people in airline and airport organisations, partly through learning in the workplace. This module covers key personnel concerns and developments in the tourism industry, concentrating on resourcing, training and development, and motivation and reward within the UK's current legal and political environment. It is aimed at encouraging and motivating you to take the initiative in identifying your own learning needs.
