About this course

4 GCSEs (A-C) or equivalent (preferably including English, Media/Technology), and at least one of the following or equivalent UK or international qualification: 1 A Level (A-C); 2 AS Levels (A-C); Level 3 Foundation Diploma or National Diploma; Progression Diploma (A-C) or International Baccalaureate (24 points or above). Also, an interview and a portfolio, showreel or other indicator of creative or technical practice where appropriate.

With optional One Year Top-Up to BA (Hons) Production

Broadcast professionals with an understanding of operations and programme production are the backbone of the industry. Working behind the camera, in the studio and on location in editing, sound, lighting and all operational roles, they turn programme concepts into transmittable reality.

The course features the latest digital technologies so that you are ready to adapt to new opportunities as the industry and your career options evolve.

Moreover, you will learn from experienced industry professionals who will share their unique experience and insights with you.

A programme of visiting speakers, work placements, industry support with new technology and an inside track to the industry, all add to Ravensbourne's unique profile in broadcast education – and a unique start to your future in the broadcasting world.

Level 1

Introduces and develops your skills in all the main tools used in broadcasting operations including studio and location cameras, microphones, location and studio audio mixers, lighting, waveform monitors, racking, audio and video patching, Avid and Final Cut Pro editing systems.

You will also learn about broadcasting processes, regulations and management.

Topics include: operational practice; production skills 1; broadcast technology; production skills 2; applied operations.

Level 2

Progresses your skills to a higher professional and academic standard. You will be encouraged to work and learn independently, specialise in your chosen area of expertise and undertake a work placement. Topics include: interactive design and technology; advanced cameras, lighting and sound; recording and transmission. plus options from: creativity in digital technology; post production; studio operations; location work; production. In addition, each Level contains units in Contextual Studies, Enterprise and Entrepreneurship, and Personal and Professional Development to give you a rounded education that prepares you for professional life.

Assessment

You will be assessed through the completion of practical and written work including essays, critical analysis, technical tasks and presentations.

Learning and Support

You will learn primarily through hands-on exercises, projects, briefings, lectures, seminars, technical or practical workshops, demonstrations and self-study. Learning is facilitated by a well-qualified permanent teaching staff, sessional staff and visiting speakers who are practising professionals and bring an important industry perspective to the course.

Progression

BA (Hons) Production with a further option to study MA/MSc Broadcast Futures.

Payment of Fees

Students may pay fees either directly to the college or by applying for a tuition fee loan.

Where students are paying fees directly to the college, tuition fees are due in full at the start of the academic year or by the dates stated above if a discount is being claimed.

Where agreement exists to pay by instalments, fees are payable as follows:-

  • 40% of the tuition fee + registration fees (if applicable) + administration charge on enrolment.
  • 30% of tuition fee at the start of the second term.
  • 30% of the tuition at the start of the third term.

Should a student withdraw from a course during the year, tuition fees will be charged as follows:-

  • Withdrawal during the first two weeks nil
  • Withdrawal before 1st January First terms fees payable
  • Withdrawal on or after 1st January Full years fees payable
  • Where Registration fees are charged these are payable on enrolment at the start of the academic year and are not refundable.

Island Students (Channel Islands & Isle of Man): £TBC Arrangements can be made with the finance office to pay tuition fees in three termly instalments. There is an administration charge of 1% of the full year's tuition fee (minimum £20) for making this arrangement Tuition fees are subject to increase for subsequent years of the course.
