About this course

4 GCSEs (A-C) or equivalent (preferably including English, Media/Technology), and at least one of the following or equivalent UK or international qualification: 1 A Level (A-C); 2 AS Levels (A-C); Level 3 Foundation Diploma or National Diploma; Progression Diploma (A-C) or International Baccalaureate (24 points or above). Also, an interview and a portfolio, showreel or other indicator of creative or technical practice where appropriate.

Course programme

With optional One Year Top-Up in BA (Hons) Editing and Post Production

Editing skills lie at the heart of this course and you will learn how to articulate story and meaning through cutting sound and picture. You will also acquire skills in screen graphics, visual effects, compositing, grading, audio-post, authoring and quality control.

To help prepare you for industry, this programme is delivered in an environment that mirrors industry practice with much of learning simulating real work-based projects.

Getting on in industry means working well with clients and across a range of post production disciplines. This is why we place considerable emphasis on developing your interpersonal and transferable skills. Throughout the course, you will have opportunities to collaborate with other students on broadcasting and design courses.

Graduates who successfully pass the Foundation Degree have the opportunity to progress to the one year top-up BA (Hons) Editing and Post Production degree.

Level 1

The first year of the course develops your knowledge in the use of post production tools, editing techniques and the broader production process.

You will learn how to critically analyse the editing process, placing it in the broader production process and relating it to story telling. Understanding television standards and evolving technology is also a key feature of your first year.

You will work on non-linear and compositing systems, editing materials across a range of genres including documentary, drama and advertising. Core topics include: post production, applied post production and broadcast technology.

Level 2

The second year builds on your skills and knowledge, with particular emphasis on developing critical skills and preparing you for work in the industry. You will be encouraged to put your skills to the test by completing technical tasks, live projects and a work placement lasting up to six weeks. Core topics include: post production and applied post production.

In addition, each Level contains units in Contextual Studies, Enterprise and Entrepreneurship, and Personal and Professional Development to give you a rounded education that prepares you for professional life.

Assessment

You will be assessed through the completion of practical and written work including essays and a range of individual or group artefacts, presentations and project reports. There will also be critical self and peerevaluation to allow you to reflect on your development, and support to give you feedback and help you succeed.

Learning and Support

The course's learning and support methods aim to develop you both intellectually and professionally. You will learn through lectures, analytical screenings, masterclasses focusing on specific creative and technical skills, workshops, work experience and a mix of group and individual projects.

Learning is facilitated by a wellqualified permanent teaching staff, sessional staff and visiting guest speakers who bring an important industry perspective to the course.

Progression

Successful graduates of this course can continue their study and apply for the BA (Hons) Editing and Post Production one year top-up degree.

Payment of Fees

Students may pay fees either directly to the college or by applying for a tuition fee loan.

Where students are paying fees directly to the college, tuition fees are due in full at the start of the academic year or by the dates stated above if a discount is being claimed.

Where agreement exists to pay by instalments, fees are payable as follows:-

  • 40% of the tuition fee + registration fees (if applicable) + administration charge on enrolment.
  • 30% of tuition fee at the start of the second term.
  • 30% of the tuition at the start of the third term.

Should a student withdraw from a course during the year, tuition fees will be charged as follows:-

  • Withdrawal during the first two weeks nil
  • Withdrawal before 1st January First terms fees payable
  • Withdrawal on or after 1st January Full years fees payable
  • Where Registration fees are charged these are payable on enrolment at the start of the academic year and are not refundable.

Island Students (Channel Islands & Isle of Man): £TBC Arrangements can be made with the finance office to pay tuition fees in three termly instalments. There is an administration charge of 1% of the full year's tuition fee (minimum £20) for making this arrangement Tuition fees are subject to increase for subsequent years of the course.
Career opportunities: Graduates can expect to find employment in broadcast organisations, facilities houses and other related communications industries. Entry-level jobs typically include: runner, VT operator, assistant editor/compositor, junior editor/compositor.
