Course Description:

The Foundation Degree in Rugby Coaching, awarded by the University of Central Lancashire, has been designed to develop highly trained and qualified graduates with the academic knowledge, coaching expertise and practical skills to gain rewarding and exciting careers in the rugby industry. Based around the work of a modern rugby coach, the course encourages students to develop innovative, contemporary ideas which are underpinned by traditional values and practices.

The course focuses on coaching within community, club and high performance environments. Students are offered a wealth of opportunity to develop their coaching skills and gain vital experience, on and off the field, from organising and delivering competitions to training principles and performance analysis. This makes this course an ideal choice for anyone who wants to develop their knowledge of rugby from a vocational perspective.

Modules intend to develop the core skills required by the rugby industry primarily focusing on the development of coaching styles, methods and philosophies, rugby practices, delivery techniques, skill acquisition, and the factors implicated in elite performance. Other modules are aimed at developing an awareness of the physiological, psychological and biomechanical factors linked to successful performance. Students will also gain an understanding of sports and event management, marketing and development through the delivery of their own rugby tournament in association with the RFU. The course also covers the organisation, structure and development of community sports clubs whilst increasing the awareness of talent identification and player pathways.

A strong vocational ethos runs through the course, where students are encouraged to become proactive in creating links with a range of industrial placements and community partners during their Work Skills Development, Work Project and Sports Events modules. Students are further encouraged to develop their coaching skills through an active engagement with local rugby clubs, as well as extra-curricular coaching opportunities within local primary and secondary schools (subject to CRB clearance). Opportunities may be available to achieve recognised qualifications including Tag, Rugby Ready, UKCC Level 1 & 2 in coaching Rugby Union, ELRA and other coaching related qualifications (at own cost).

It should be noted that to succeed on this course, it is not a pre-requisite to be a gifted and talented rugby player. However, it is important to have an enthusiasm for playing the game and a strong interest in and some prior experience of coaching.

On commencing the course students may be required to complete a DBS check at a cost to the student.

Year 1

Applied Rugby Coaching

This module introduces students to the development and evaluation of rugby performance. It reinforces the main concepts established in Rugby Coaching Principles and Practice. It covers the psychology of sport performance, information gathering, developing observations, and administering feedback and evaluation.

Rugby Coaching Principles and Practice

This module provides the theory of the coaching process. It identifies the main philosophies, styles and practices of rugby coaching. These include skill acquisition, delivery techniques, child protection, equity and coaching and the law.

Introduction to the Science of Rugby

This module will introduce students to the essential theoretical principles, contextual knowledge and practical skills to test and improve rugby performance. The module will cover four key areas of rugby specific sports science. Students will review the key components of effective strength and conditioning and fitness testing through a variety of practical experiences in addition to the ways in which sports psychology and sports nutrition can enhance athletic performance.

Strength and Conditioning for Rugby

This module aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills of how to develop rugby players physically and prepare them for the rigours of the sport.
