About this course


To create a successful spa you have to create an inviting and relaxing atmosphere, manage a variety of specialist therapies and run an efficient and profitable business. Most hotel resorts both in the UK and abroad now have their own spas and they are looking for trained professionals with the skills needed to manage them. The foundation degree in Spa Therapies and Management gives you the leadership skills and practical experience you need to be able to manage a spa or start your own spa business.

For 2017 entry you must have a minimum of 32 UCAS tariff score.

Course programme

What will I study?

Year 1

In the first year business concepts are explored in spa organisations and how they can achieve profitability. The ageing process is also studied to develop an understanding of the basic

anatomy and physiology of the body systems and how these relate to the ageing process. Additionally, the history of the spa is explored and how it evolved into the major international industry that it is today. You will look at diverse massage treatments within the spa industry.

Your work is practically focussed with health and safety forming part of it. You also cover first aid training. Through work on case studies your knowledge of the industry will begin to develop. As the year progresses you will begin to identify your own individual learning styles with the opportunity for you to develop your IT skills, essay writing, note taking and presentation skills.

Year 2

The second year aims to further develop your knowledge and skills. By undertaking a work placement, your skills and confidence will develop and you will achieve professional

accreditation recognised within the spa industry. You will look at the global spa industry through research and evaluate the latest innovations within the industry.

You also have the opportunity to develop knowledge of health, safety, hygiene and environmental factors within the spa industry.

Social enterprise is a massive part of the spa therapy industry, as such you are encouraged to establish a business to support the community. It also offers the opportunity to

examine the use of current spa equipment and facilities and analyse them in regards to suitability and purpose.

Please note the outline of study detailed above is based on a student studying full-time. The part-time study route encompasses the same outline however is delivered over three years, rather than two years.

Additional information

A range of assessment methods will be utilised including essays, reports, practical assessment, presentations and role plays.
