This Foundation Degree, awarded by the University of Central Lancashire, is designed to provide the skills, knowledge and practical training required for a career in the sports industry, whether from a playing, coaching or business perspective. The Foundation Degree provides a comprehensive knowledge of sports studies and relevant practical experience. It covers a range of study areas including sports coaching, sports development, sports science and sports management and marketing.

The emphasis throughout the Foundation Degree is on the development of a range of professional and vocational skills. Modules are selected to ensure that students will develop the essential knowledge and skills to work in their chosen area of sport. These include the sporting infrastructure, coaching principles and practice, coaching in games, sports event management and sports development. The course is constructed around the modern coach and encourages students to develop innovative coaching ideas, underpinned by traditional values.

The course also provides students with a variety of coaching opportunities with local youngsters who comprise Myerscough’s successful junior and youth teams. There are numerous other coaching opportunities locally.

Year 1

Personal and Vocational Development in Sport

This module develops key academic skills in order to bridge the gap between work, school/college to university; from more dependent to independent modes of learning.

The Delivery of Sport and Physical Activity

The aim of this module is to provide and understanding of the major frameworks and delivery structures relating to the provision of and support for sport and physical activity within the UK.

Coaching Process

The focus of this module is to provide the theory of the coaching process. It outlines the knowledge required for a coach to be able to operate in different and safe environments within sport. The practical element of the module allows for experience in a variety of sport-related contexts. Practical experiences will support the acquisition of theoretical principles throughout.

Fundamentals of Coaching

The aim of this module is to provide an understanding of the development and evaluation of sports performance through the use of coaching and underpinning science principles. This module can be linked to the coaching process through shared theoretical elements.

Sports Events

This module is about understanding the planning and organisation of sporting events. Special events in the sports industry take place in a wide variety of contexts (i.e. different sports/activities). Likewise there are many different types of events that are organised by sports managers (i.e. individual/team sports tournaments and major/minor events). Regardless of the size and scope of the event there are considerable logistical elements and potential problems which must be considered in the planning process. The content of this unit provides candidates with a sound theoretical knowledge of event planning and management which can be applied to the task of planning/managing and funding/resourcing a wide variety of types and contexts of sporting events.

Essentials of Training and Conditioning

This module will introduce students to the scientific principles, concepts and theories of resistance training and conditioning as well as their practical application to athletic performance. Students will review key components of effective strength and conditioning, This module applies conditioning practices to enhancement of performance, using key performance indicators outlined by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Year 2

Analysing and Improving Performance

To provide a framework where sports coaches can apply the coaching process and develop techniques to evaluate sports performance, particularly technical and tactical analysis. This will include a review of pertinent scientific elements of training/performance.

Coaching Multi-sports

This module gives the student the opportunity to develop and appreciate the skills, techniques and strategies in Sports. It develops an awareness in students of the demands and considerations of Sports coaching.

Issues in Sports Development

Students will examine the tools, techniques products of sports development. The environment in which sports development officers currently operate will be analysed including the issues of equality, politics and funding.

Research Project

The aim of this module is to develop the ability of students to undertake investigative research. The module will focus upon information-related academic and market research skills, research methodology, data collection techniques, data analysis and writing skills.

Talent ID and Pathways

The aim of this module is to provide the student with an understanding of performance pathways developed by organisations to develop players to their full potential. The module will also examine the support mechanisms which aid in this development of players.

Work Placement

This module aims to provide students with and gain credit for experiential learning opportunities within the sports and leisure industry. Provide students with the opportunity to undertake personal self-development and the acquisition of key skills within the workplace environment. Provide a setting where theory and practice can be integrated within the context of the sport and leisure industry. Provide an environment where students are required to evaluate contemporary issues within the sport and leisure industry.

Assessment:

There is a wide variety of assessment methods which help all learners. Practical assessments, written assessments, oral presentations and observations are spread across the course modules.

Additional Information:


As part of increasing employability the second year students will help lead and run a small sports coaching business. The business provides coaching of a wide range of activities for local school and sports clubs. Any proceeds gained will be donated to charity.


What do students think about this course?


With an increase in practical sessions students have indicated their pleasure of attaining more hands on application of their skills. Group cohesion in class is always mentioned as a great contributor to enjoying life at Myerscough.


Work Experience:


Through the work experience module on the second year students must complete a number of hours voluntary work in local schools and clubs.


Progression:


Successful students may have the opportunity to apply for the final year (top up) of the University of Central Lancashire BA (Hons) Sports Studies and the BA (Hons) Sports Coaching.

What are our graduates doing now?


Graduate students follow many paths. Many attain jobs at national sport clubs in a variety of sports. Other areas students develop their own coaching business within their home towns or progress onto teaching sports/PE in schools and colleges.


What international opportunities are available?


Students have progressed onto coaching throughout the world. Recently students have developed contacts in America and Africa attaining coaching position though the completion of the course.
