Course description
This course has been designed in consultation with a number of employers. They have expressed a need for engineering technicians with specialist knowledge, but with an appreciation of the engineering challenges across the various engineering disciplines.
It is for people currently working in engineering and provides you with the flexibility to work in various roles across your organisation.
We focus on work-based learning, so you apply your academic studies to your workplace. This ensures that the learning is relevant to both you and your employer.
You study the underlying principles of engineering before specialising in mechanical engineering. Business operations and employability are covered throughout the course providing you with the skills and knowledge to build a successful engineering career.
Other skills you develop to improve your career potential include • business management • project management • teamwork • communication. You also complete projects which involve the analysing, designing, prototyping and testing of control and instrumentation systems and components.
The course is run as a partnership with Derby College and North Lindsey College, allowing you to benefit from the combined resources and experience of the three institutions.
After successfully completing this foundation degree, you can apply for two more years of part-time study to gain a BEng honours degree.
Professional recognition
This programme is IEng accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and fulfils the educational requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer when presented with an IEng accredited Bachelors programme.

You study the underlying principles of engineering before specialising in mechanical engineering. Your studies are work based, meaning that what you learn is relevant to your workplace. After completing this course you can apply to gain a BEng honours degree.

2017 entry requirements
Typically you need a GCSE grade C or above in English and mathematics or an equivalent qualification, plus one from
• an A-level pass or two AS level passes in a relevant science or technology subject
• an advanced VCE double award in an appropriate engineering, manufacturing or technology topic
• an EdExcel/BTEC/SCOTVEC National Certificate or Diploma in a science or technology-based subject
• a pass in the preparatory year of the Extended Degree Programme Engineering and Mathematics or another...

Course programme

Course structure

Part-time – typically 1 day a week.

You can study 24 weeks a year for three years at North Lindsey College or you can study 36 weeks a year for 2 years at Derby College.
