Course summary
Architectural technologists use their knowledge to make sure domestic, commercial and industrial building designs work as intended in real life. Design and development are increasingly complex processes, where reconciling the needs of the client, community and environment means design proposals and detailed decisions are challenging, and need expert judgement.

On this vocational technical design course specifically designed for the people who have been working in the building design industry, you will train for a professional role, developing skills that are transferable to other design areas of the built environment. You will learn about the inter-relationships and multidisciplinary nature of the built environment, and gain a broad understanding of the work of fellow professionals in neighbouring disciplines. This course also emphasises sustainable design and construction. The course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT).

Year 1 (Level 4)

Building Technology
This module is designed to introduce you to concepts of building technology. We will focus on providing you with concepts from site investigation through foundations to the superstructure of low-rise buildings. There will also be consideration of finishes and primary service provision in the structure.

Building Regulatory Control
This module is designed to give you an understanding and appreciation of Building Regulations and Town and Country Planning legislation that affect the building industry. You will be able to investigate the effects of the legislation upon construction projects. The essential knowledge and skills regarding health and safety are also covered in this module.

Core Skills
This module is designed to provide you with the basic construction and academic skills that you will need to both complete the course and back up your work. It ranges from basic skills in numeracy, literacy and IT through to drawing skills and surveying techniques used in construction.

Design Procedures and Procurement
This module is designed to give you an overview of the building design construction and operation process combined with various stakeholders and professionals involved, and procurement methods. It covers the detail of each stage in the RIBA Plan of Work, and the sequences of the stages in a construction project with different procurement approaches. The module also tackles tendering and cost estimating methods, techniques and skills.

CAD and BIM
This module provides you with the knowledge and skills of computer aided design via learning two pieces of software - AutoCAD and AutoCAD Revit. With AutoCAD, you will learn the basic CAD concepts and skills, such as:
drawing polylines
modifying
texting
hatching
dimensioning.
With AutoCAD Revit, you will learn the BIM-based CAD skills and concepts, and practice it to be able to produce basic building modules, primary working drawings and 3D views.

Construction Materials
This module is intended to provide an overview and study of the principal materials used within the construction industry. The focus is on the selection of the most appropriate materials through study of your properties, engineering performance characteristics, the human comfort properties and the sustainability considerations of those materials.

Work-based Company Review
The module is completed as work based learning with supported tutorials from the department as well as the work- based mentor from the company. The module will enable you to look at the company’s organisation, structure, policies and project.

Year 2 (Level 5)

Integrated Construction Project
This module allows you to work together in teams to analyse a project. This analysis will be related to the course in order to give greater considerations of several course areas such as developing presentation and communication skills.

Advanced Technology
This module enables you to further your knowledge and understanding of building technology. It focuses in more depth on the consequences of science upon building design and sustainability considerations. It will also move towards considerations of multi-floored construction and a greater depth of services.

Building Surveying and Adaptation
This module is designed to enable you to be able to carry out the investigations of properties for possibilities of conversion and adaptation. It will also provide the chance to enhance skills in development of plans and specifications for converting or adapting existing buildings.

Environmental Science
This module is designed to enable you to investigate and examine materials, and human comfort factors in order to comprehend the construction and the use of the built environment. This will be completed in a series of experiments that you will undertake. The results and observation from these experiments will be used to produce series of reports related to the materials and human comfort.

Design Technology
This module is designed to provide you with skill to develop designs that are controllable and provide the required performance. It will enable you to produce specifications in the context of their needs, and apply scientific principles to ensure human comfort.

Integrated Construction Project
This module is designed to allow you to work together in teams to analyse a project. This analysis will be related to the course in order to give greater emphasis to several areas of the course. You will also be developing your presentation and communication skills.
