This is a vocationally orientated management and technology course specifically designed for people who have been working in the construction industry. You will be trained for the professional role of project manager or site manager of construction project development. With project management skills, a construction manager supervises and directs operations in a construction project to ensure it is completed safely, on time and within budget. With sole responsibility for the whole project, he or she is the first point of contact for subcontractors and the public.
Through this course, you will also develop an insight into the various construction processes and techniques, and into resource management and quality control. The skills you gain are transferable to other areas of construction management, and the qualification is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).

Entry requirements
180 UCAS tariff points or equivalent qualifications at Level 3 and Level 2 Maths and English.
Students on the Foundation Degree must be in employment, or have access to employment. It may be possible for the University to assist in finding placements.

Building Technology
This module is designed to introduce you to concepts of building technology. We will focus on providing you with concepts, from the site investigation through foundations to the superstructure of low-rise buildings. We will also be looking at finishes and primary service provision in the structure.
Building Regulatory Control
This module is designed to give you an understanding and appreciation of Building Regulations and Town and Country Planning legislation that affect the building industry. You will be able to investigate the effects of the legislation upon construction projects. In this module we will also equip you with essential health and safety knowledge, requirements and skills.
Core Skills
This module is designed to provide you with the basic construction and academic skills that you will need to both complete the course and back up your work. It ranges from basic skills in numeracy, literacy and IT through to drawing skills and surveying techniques used in construction.
CAD and BIM
This module provides you with the knowledge and skills to confidently use computer aided design via learning two pieces of software - AutoCAD and AutoCAD Revit.
With AutoCAD, you will learn the basic CAD concepts and skills, such as:
drawing polylines
modifying
texting
hatching
dimensioning.
With AutoCAD Revit, you will learn the BIM-based CAD skills and concepts, and practices it to be able to produce basic building modules, primary working drawings and 3D views.
Design Procedures and Procurement
This module is designed to give you an overview of the building design construction and operation process combined with various stakeholders and professionals involved, and procurement methods. It covers the detail of each stage in RIBA Plan of Work, and the sequences of the stages in a construction project with different procurement approaches. The module also tackles tendering and cost estimating methods, techniques and skills.
Construction Materials
This module is intended to provide an overview and study of the principal materials used within the construction industry. The focus is on the selection of the most appropriate materials through study of their properties, engineering performance characteristics, the human comfort properties and the sustainability considerations of those materials.
Work-based Company Review
The module is completed as work based learning with supported tutorials from the department as well as the work- based mentor from the company. The module will enable you to look at the company’s organisation, structure, policies and project.

Level 5
Integrated Construction Project
This module allows you to work together in teams to analyse a project. This analysis will be related to the course in order to give greater considerations of several course areas such as developing presentation and communication skills.

Advanced Technology
This module enables you to further your knowledge and understanding of building technology. It focuses in more depth on the consequences of science upon building design and sustainability considerations. It will also move towards considerations of multi-floored construction and a greater depth of services.

Project Planning
This module lets you plan, programme and control the resources used in construction. It will give you an appreciation of the role of the project manager and the ways in which sites are managed.
Environmental Science
This module is designed to you to investigate and examine materials, and human comfort factors in order to comprehend the construction and the use of the built environment. This will be completed in a series of experiments that you will undertake. The results and observation from these experiments will be used to produce series of reports related to the materials and human comfort.
Construction Law
This module develops your awareness of the role of law and its application to all aspects of construction.
Business Management
This module permits you to consider the management of construction as a business. It will consider leadership styles, the need for clear company objectives and structures, client and industry relationships, employee relationships, cash flow analysis and the impact of sustainable considerations.
