About this course

Must have five GCSEs at grades A*-C to include Maths and English at grade C or above. In addition to general college requirements you will be expected to achieve at least a C (or equivalent) in any Media based courses you have taken at Level 2. You will also need to present evidence of your previous planning, creative or technical potential in film, video or animation production.

What will I study?
The Diploma is based on the core disciplines of Film, TV and Animation. This is a busy, exciting and production-centred course based around industry standard facilities. You will develop a high level of practical skills such as camerawork, editing and lighting alongside learning how to plan, write and organise your filmwork.

Do I need any additional qualifications/ skills?
The Diploma combines creative and technical development with rigorous academic challenges, including and developing essay writing, research, documentation and presentation skills to an advanced level. Students will be encouraged to develop Personal, Learning and Thinking Skills including self expression, teamwork and self management. The Advanced Diploma includes an additional qualification chosen in agreement with the course tutor. Study can be specialised by choosing an additional qualification related to a production area such as Film Studies or Photography. Alternatively learners might decide to choose a different subject that broadens the learning experience. The Diploma includes work related experience, as well as trips, visits and visiting speakers and workshops.

How will I be assessed?
Assessment is primarily through observation and presentation of practical productions, supported by written coursework, group critique and individual tutorial. Students are encouraged to assess their skills honestly, and to critique their work constructively. Learners will be assessed on their ability to research the contexts of their work; record, analyse and review their own development and contribution to projects; plan and prepare public exhibition of work; work to briefs and for target audiences; investigate and research creative practitioners; demonstrate a clear understanding of how disciplines, skills and teams work together to produce work in the creative industries. Assessment is also through critical evaluation of practical work and you and the production of a written study of professional practice, supported by a research log. As part of the Diploma students will need to pass functional skills tests in English, Maths and ICT at Level 2 as a minimum requirement.

You will be provided with free access to a level of resources such as blank media but may need to contribute to the costs of additional resources including props etc. Trips may also include additional costs.
