AS & A Level
About the Course
At AS Level you will learn about the different forms of cinema in Britain and America and focus on how storytelling and film communicate meaning and generate responses. You will use your academic knowledge in a practical way by producing a short film of your own. The course also shows you how the film industry works in terms of marketing and funding and how films make money. We don†t just study Hollywood but also our own vibrant industry in the UK, looking at issues such as how Britishness is represented in film and specific movements such as the Swinging 60s. The A2 course takes your AS skills and knowledge to a higher level in a variety of ways. Your coursework focuses first on a Small Scale Research Project, where you base an assignment around a personal interest. You could base your project on your favourite director such as Quentin Tarantino, Stanley Kubrick or Steven Spielberg by researching their contribution to cinema, or alternatively you could choose a genre you like such as horror or sci-fi, or perhaps study your favourite actor. This part of the course is designed for you to work on your own interests. The second half of the coursework in the A2 year is an extension of the AS, where you can either make a longer and more complex short film or you can focus on screenwriting. The A2 examination focuses on the issues and debates of Film Studies such as world cinema (Japan, Mexico, Iran and Bollywood), film and feminism and experimental film.
