Film Studies is of course about Film, but the aim of the course is to use this important medium as a way of understanding how we respond to the modern world. It is not an exaggeration to say that today most of the information we get comes from moving-image broadcasts, whether on TV or the internet and Film was the first form of this. Therefore, understanding how Film works - engaging our emotions as well as our brains - is a vital part of understanding our world.

Course programme

That said, the focus of the course is on films themselves, as both art form and popular entertainment, and the primary activity is analysing them. Given that films themselves are still a major source of popular entertainment, studying them is also a lot of fun!
