What will I study?
You will study two modules in the first year:
· Exploring film form. In this module you willstudy how micro aspects (cinematography,mise en scène, editing, performance andsound) produce meanings and responsesin many films including Pulp Fiction,Trainspotting, Silence of the Lambs, E.T.,The Football Factory and Jaws.
· British and American film. Section A.Producers and audiences: The Hollywoodand British film industries and filmaudiences. Section B. British film topics:Swinging Britain1963-73. Section C. US Film -comparative study: teen movies. Casestudy: American Pie and Kids.
In the second year you will study two modules:
· Film research and creative projects.Learning in this module focuses on twopractical activities: one is research basedand the other is creative work. For theresearch-based project you will carry out asmall scale research project and presentyour findings. The creative work takes oneof three forms, either production of a threeto five minute film of the sequence, anextended step outline of the sequenceor a screenplay.
· Varieties of film experience - issues anddebates
Section A. World cinema: power, povertyand conflict.
Section B. Spectatorship topic: popular filmand emotional response.
Section C. Single film: Fight Club

How is the course assessed?
The assessment for the film studies course is50% coursework and 50% exams.
