Course programme

Film studies is a fertile and expanding area of academic study. In many countries film has been one of the most popular forms of entertainment for a century but, paradoxically, only recently has it been the subject of serious academic scrutiny.

At Greenwich we have our own way of approaching the subject. Film studies can be taken as a single honours degree or combined with another discipline within the School of Humanities & Social Sciences. Here the subject is primarily theoretical but there are plenty of opportunities to take practice-based courses if you opt for the single honours programme.

BA Film Studies

This single honours degree builds around a carefully selected set of core courses at all three levels that introduce students to ways of reading and understanding film, to the political, commercial and historical processes determining the production of motion pictures, the experience of those who work in the industry, the relationship between film and identity, and the impact of cinema in a variety of urban and global contexts.

At all levels, students have the choice of deepening their theoretical understanding of film by taking appropriate options or adding a practice-based strand. These strands which are pursued over the three years of the degree programme are: media writing, documentary video production, and fiction video production. The university is a great place to experience movie making first hand as major film and TV companies regularly shoot on the Greenwich campus.

The programme equips students to: critically engage with the medium of film and its place within society and culture; reflect upon the commercial and industrial process of producing films; and relate theoretical study to practice-based work.

BA Film Studies and/with...

It is possible to jointly combine film studies with another academic subject. The BA Film Studies Combined degree is designed for those who want to take film studies equally with one other Humanities subject -- English, history, sociology, politics, or philosophy. Students take two film studies core courses in each year (see above), alongside designated courses in their other subject. The BA Film Studies Combined degree emphasises the theoretical study of cinema, film, and the motion picture industry while the BA Film Studies allows students to take practice-based courses.
