What can this course offer me?
Film Studies is an exciting and vibrant subject that can change the way you watch films forever. The AS course is divided into two different modules, all of which are designed to shape and challenge the way you look at films.
FM1: Exploring Film Form
FM2: British and American Film
FM1 is the coursework module which is worth 40% of the course. In this you will have the chance to write two analytical essays on different aspects of film form and also the chance to write, storyboard or actually make a short film! FM2 is an exam based module, worth 60%, which examines the Hollywood and British film industries and looks at the relationship between film production and audiences.
What will I learn?
The course is taught by highly qualified staff and technicians all of whom can help you make the most of your skills and interests. Film Studies is an excellent subject if you are keen to develop writing skills, visual and production skills and analytical skills. It is a subject that will constantly challenge you and will encourage you to think for yourself. If that isn't enough, there is also the annual Media and Film Studies Oscars awards ceremony to look forward to. This event is eagerly anticipated by students and the competitive spirit often makes students try even harder to win a coveted Oscar statue.
The department also organises trips, speakers and workshops at various points in the course. Recently, these have included speakers on script writing, a representative from B.B.FC, the Mobile Cinema, trips to Manchester Cornerhouse, London and Liverpool FACT.
What Makes a good Film Studies student?
Film Studies attracts students that are creative, passionate, dedicated and really interested in films and the film industry. It will also help if you have an analytical, critical mind.
Which other courses link well with this subject?
English Language and Literature, Sociology and Media Studies are all natural combinations with Film Studies but there are lots of other subjects that also link with the subject including Business Studies, Psychology, Art and Graphics, Psychology and Politics.
Future Opportunities
The practical, creative and analytical aspects of the course provide an excellent starting point for either higher academic study or for a career in film production. Many of our students have continued with Film Studies or Film production at University and some intrepid students have shown their films at regional competitions and film festivals such as Manchester Cornerhouse's 'Under Exposed' student film festival.
