Debunk the myths surrounding the world of business finance

Finance literacy is crucial to the success of your organisation. It is essential that all of your people have a working knowledge of the principles of finance.

This programme helps your people jump the jargon hurdle and also makes the crucial links between business and finance. It will give your people the confidence to use financial information more effectively to support successful business decision-making. We use real world business examples/cases and scenarios that your people can relate to, showing them how their actions and decisions impact on the financial health of your business.

The returning participants will benefit your organisation by:

  • understanding the business cycle and its relationship with financial measurement
  • being confident with finance jargon
  • understanding the primary financial statements - balance sheet, profit and loss account and cash flow statement
  • appreciating the importance of profits and cash flow (and how they differ)
  • understanding the main financial performance measures and how they can act as key drivers of business success
  • communicating more effectively and therefore productively with finance colleagues
  • having an appreciation of shareholder value and how it cascades through the business

Session 1 - The Business CycleThe session starts with a tutor led discussion which places finance firmly in the "doing better business arena": The business success and its measurement is explored. Coverage includes:

  • how business success is achieved and measured
  • jargon
  • how well are you doing?

This session puts the detail of session 2 into context. The tricky issue of financial jargon is addressed early on via our "jargon game".

Session 2 - The Three Key Financial StatementsParticipants are asked to work in groups, given a series of cards with a piece of financial information on each and asked to use this information to build a profit and loss account and a balance sheet. This identifies all the major questions and confusions surrounding these key financial statements which are explained and "debunked" in the debrief. Some further information is provided and the groups are then asked to build a cash flow statement.

Session 3 - Some Fundamental PrinciplesUsing the example from session 2 we explore some of the key conceptual building blocks surrounding finance information including:

  • matching (accruals)
  • revenue vs capital
  • profit vs cash
  • working capital

All of these will be illustrated using fun and interesting real life examples with which the group will be familiar for example; the accounting treatment of David Beckham by Manchester United compared with Real Madrid.

Session 4 - Financial Performance MetricsHere we look at how financial performance is often distilled down to a few key numbers. We will explore what each of the key metrics mean and how they like to each other. This will be done using real industry information with which the participants will be familiar. They will also be asked to calculate and analyse the metrics for the financials prepared in session 2. Metrics covered will include:

  • return on investment
  • margins
  • efficiency metrics
  • the hierarchy of ratios.

Session 5 - Shareholder Value and The CityIn this final session participants are given a "Financial Times quiz" to review how shareholders and investors view the performance of a business. We consider what shareholders want both in terms of dividends and capital growth....the key components of shareholder value. Other metrics, such as p/e will also be examined.

Session 6 - Review and CloseThe participants will review the day, including share their key learning points with others. A reinforcement quiz consolidates the learning.
