Course programme

MSc Finance

Part-Time Programme

Specialist knowledge of finance is increasingly valued in commercial firms, government and academia. Students on the Birkbeck MSc obtain excellent specialist training in financial economics including: basic portfolio theory, corporate finance and advanced pricing theory applied to derivatives and government bond markets. Students also complete courses on international finance and the microstructure of securities markets. They also learn the latest econometrics and numerical analysis skills important in the marketplace. The course is demanding and challenging; applicants should have strong intellectual ability and be willing to work hard.

Entry Requirements

The Birkbeck MSc Finance emphasizes the technical skills and rigour which have been increasingly important in financial markets. As such, our main entry criterion is academic excellence: you will need at least the equivalent of a UK II:i degree (in economics, finance or a technical subject such as mathematics or statistics). You will have shown aptitude in technical subjects (mathematics, statistics; at a minimum, you should know calculus and linear algebra but the course makes extensive use of stochastic calculus and partial differential equations, and students with the minimum mathematics background may have difficulty). You will also have some background in economics and finance, either through a first degree or through work experience. We would recommend our Graduate Diplomas for students without these prerequisites in economics, finance, mathematics or statistics.
