This Fine Art course runs in 2016/17.

Are you excited by the world of contemporary art? Do you want
to produce artworks in a creative environment? Innovation and imagination are the hallmarks of Fine Art practice at Coventry University.

  • annual study trips abroad which in the past have included New York, Berlin, Madrid and the Venice Biennale.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

The course structure is based on a balanced curriculum that includes Fine Art studio practice, contextual studies, and professional practice.

In year one you will undertake a series of structured projects across a range of art media. From these you will be encouraged to become more self-directed in your studies, identifying and developing personal interests and concerns. Our course places emphasis on the professional realm of contemporary art, and in year two we will provide you with the opportunity to undertake an off-site project or professional placement. As you work your way towards your final self-directed project in year three, you will be encouraged to consider the larger themes, histories and ideas that contextualise the production and reception of your work.

By its very nature, contemporary fine art practice incorporates a range of approaches from the autobiographical and the personal, to issues and research-driven projects. Throughout your course of study, you will be encouraged to consider the wider social, political and cultural debates that inform and enrich contemporary art.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

Your course will be primarily based on the development of your studio practice but you will also have lectures, tutorials, seminars and workshops. You will have lots of opportunity to develop your professional skills through visiting and participating in exhibitions.

If you are interested in part-time study (which is taught during the day) please contact the Part-time Admissions team on +44 (0) 24 7765 4321 or email part-time.uni@coventry.ac.uk for further information, but please note that not all courses have a part-time option.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

At the end of each module or project you will submit your work for assessment and critique, and receive feedback and guidance in response. You will submit a combination of practical coursework, placement reports, presentations and essays. The practical aspects of your work will culminate in the final year Degree Show.

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: practical coursework 70%; essays/reports 20%; presentations 10%.

A compulsory Add+vantage module must also be completed: please see the page on the Add+vantage scheme for more details.

TEACHING CONTACT HOURS

In a typical week you will have up to 16 contact hours of teaching and this will break down as:

Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 1 hour of small group or individually guided work and 12 allocated hours of studio time

Medium group teaching: 2 hour of seminars each week

Large group teaching: 1 hours of lectures each week

Personal study: You will be expected to work on your coursework assignments as self directed study for a further 20 hours each week
