Course programme

The focus of the first term is to prepare you for the Personal Creative Enquiry. You will develop the ability to respond creatively to a variety of visual stimuli. You will research extensively, gathering material which will include drawings, photographs and notes to provide you with a rich source of inspiration for your fine art work. Throughout this time, you will be introduced to an exciting range of materials, techniques and processes including an exploration of traditional and contemporary drawing methods, lino, mono printing, mono-silk screen, etching, collagraph, painting, mixed media and assemblage. You will complete a series of short projects to enable you to practise your new skills further and develop individual approaches.
The Personal Creative Enquiry provides the opportunity to explore and develop your fine art skills further, inspired by a theme of your choice. Working to this theme for about one and a half terms, you will start to develop greater independence in your work, carrying out visual research; experimenting with materials and processes and exploring and generating ideas through notes, drawings and samples. Your aim will be to create original, high quality finished fine artwork that expresses personal ideas and concepts about your chosen theme.
Throughout the year you will investigate the work of an extensive range of other artists to develop and inform your own. You will be able to take part in visits to galleries and exhibitions in order to gain a greater understanding of historical developments, cultural traditions, and contemporary practice helping you to develop critical judgement. Recent visits have included the Saatchi Gallery, Tate Modern and Tate Britain and the Victoria & Albert Museum. Opportunities to travel to Paris, Barcelona and the Venice Biennale have also been offered.
