Course programme

One of the few universities in the UK where Fine Art can be studied along with Performance Studies as part of a university degree scheme.

This is a highly vocational course involving the study of two of the most important areas of the creative industries. The University has a long established reputation for excellence in the teaching of creative subjects and provides you with a range of superb facilities. These include the comprehensive theatrical, rehearsal and performance venues available in our Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies and on our campus arts centre - one of the largest in Wales.

We believe that a sound knowledge of past art informs and enhances present art practice and, equally, that a sound knowledge of how art objects are made helps inform our understanding of the History of Art. The course is designed to provide a professional training in both art and art history and seeks, by question and analysis, subject knowledge, training and skill to provide a sound education which should continue after life at University.

A flexible course structure

A flexible course structure allows you to postpone until the end of the first year your final choice of degree scheme.

Course projects in the first year are followed by technical and professional courses and from the end of the second, and in their final year, students specialise in one or two areas in which they are encouraged to develop their own projects, and teaching is on an individual basis.

A wide range of assessment methods

Assessments are made from a combination of course and projects work, essays, examination papers, and exhibitions. The University has recently implemented modularisation which allows for assessment at the end of each module, together with accumulation of credits.

The opportunity to combine the study of traditional skills and techniques with contemporary theory and practice.

We believe that a sound knowledge of past art and drama informs and enhances present practice in art and, equally, that a sound knowledge of how art objects are made helps to inform our understanding of the history of art. We try to achieve this, not by amalgamating both subjects as if there were no differences, but by presenting each as a distinct discipline with its own requirements.

Vocational orientation

The School is very similar to the traditional art school environment in that it seeks to provide professional training and the acquisition of taught skills alongside tuition, which is based on the need of individual students. The record of placement on post-graduate courses is excellent, as is the record of post-graduate employment.

Excellent resources

The School of Art boasts excellent facilities including spacious, well-lit studios, print workshops, darkrooms, lecture theatres, and seminar rooms, together with a suite of galleries for student, staff, and touring exhibitions.

All courses are delivered by staff who are research active.

As part of the course, there are organised field trips and all students can apply for Travel Awards (additional fees are charged for study trips).

The Department of Theatre, Film & Television Studies has a comprehensive range of rehearsal and performance facilities in a new £4m purpose-built building.

The School of Art acts as a custodian of the University's Art Collections in the form of the School of Art Collection and is also responsible for the Ceramics Gallery and the Gregynog Hall Gallery at Newtown, Powys, in addition to the Gallery and Museum situated in the School. The large collection is particularly rich in prints and photographs, which the students are encouraged to use.

The University has the largest Arts Centre of its kind in Britain and in addition to the theatre and concert hall, runs three art galleries.

Adjacent to the School of Art is the National Library of Wales, one of the copyright libraries in Britain, which also houses collections, particularly of prints, drawings and photographs of international significance.
