First Diploma in Applied Science

This course will provide you with a real alternative to studying GCSEs. It offers a different progression route to further education and ultimately university.

What will I be doing?
iThe BTEC First Diploma in Applied Sciences is a one year course. During the year you will study a mixture of core and specialist units. The course covers the areas of Chemistry, Physics and Biology and maintains a strong applied focus. Success in the course depends on your completion of assignments. The key benefit of the BTEC First Diploma is that each assignment completed will be graded shortly after completion. It will then be possible for you to monitor your own progress. You will be supported by your teacher throughout the course. Targets will be set and suggestions made on how to improve your grades.
The core units are:
  • scientific principles
  • working with science

The specialist units have been selected to give you a broad range of knowledge across Biology, Chemistry and Physics. One of the units also offers you an in-depth knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology.

How will I be assessed?
You will be required to complete six units throughout the year. There are no examinations in this course.

Where do I go from here?
On completion of the BTEC First Diploma, you may progress to most advanced level vocational courses. With a Distinction, it may be possible to take up an AS Level programme. If you are considering this option, it would be advisable to study GCSE Maths and English as well as the BTEC First Diploma.
