What are the Course Details?
This is a one year course. The First Diploma in Art and Design qualification provides the knowledge, understanding and skills for learners wishing to enter a career in Art, Design or Interactive Media. The course is designed to provide a taste of a wide range of disciplines including Graphic Design, Photography, Animation, 3 Dimensional Design, Textile Design and Fashion Design. The course is largely practical with some written work where learners will be asked to complete research tasks. This course is equivalent to four GCSEs at A* - C grades and will allow learners who complete successfully to progress to a higher-level course.


Is the Course for Me?
This course is for you if you have a keen interest in drawing, painting and design. The course covers a range of practical Art & Design subjects to help you find which area you want to develop in the future.


What will I Learn?
The course is made up of practical and written projects and workshops giving learners the opportunity to expand their horizons within the field of Art and Design. Assignments on the course vary in timescale depending on the nature of the project.

How will I Learn?
Your time on the course will usually be spent in your own group studio or specialist workshops and will be split between tutor led studio time and your own individual study time. Your course will include research tasks and work experience through participating in real client-based projects. At the end of the year, you will demonstrate your new skills through the completion of a Final Major Project. You will be expected to provide your own equipment with the exception of specialist equipment. An equipment guide will be given at the beginning of the course.


How will I be Assessed?
Your progress will be measured in a number of ways including practical projects, written assignments and internal assessment. You will receive information about this through verbal feedback from your tutor, written feedback from an assignment or project, and grading of your work. Assessment of student work is monitored by an external verifier from the examining body. Learners must pass the four core units. The two best grades from the specialist units will combine with these to form the final grade.


What Enrichments are Available?
All learners are expected to participate in some form of enrichment activity. A variety are available such as Website Design , Survival Cookery, Dance and a range of sporting activities.


Are there any Trips or Visits?
You will be required to attend trips that form part of an assignment. Trips in the past have included visits to Museums, Art Galleries or places of interest in order to gather research material, develop knowledge and inspiration.


Is there any Work Experience?
Learners will have the opportunity to experience live client-based projects.


What can I Progress to?
Many learners have progressed to National Diplomas and then to Higher National Diplomas or Degree level courses at University and are now employed within the field of Art, Design & Media.


Other Learner's Experiences;
The course prepares learners in the best possible way, learning from professionals in all areas of Art & Design. Previous successful learners have later progressed further to Higher National Diploma or Degree level courses at university and are now employed as practising designers and artists.
