The quality and safety of food has never been higher in the public awareness and what we eat has a huge impact on our health and wellbeing. Scientists are needed to promote healthy eating; ensure that food remains nutritious and safe and to oversee regulation of the food industry; this course aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to be able to that. This is a top-up course which allows students from a suitable Diploma qualification in the area of Food and Nutrition to study at level 3 and obtain a Bachelor of Science in Food and Nutrition. We currently have a progression agreement with Hong Kong University SPACE for students with the Higher Diploma in Nutrition and Food Management to transfer to our Food and Nutrition BSc (Hons) Top Up course.

Scientists are needed to promote healthy eating, ensure that food remains nutritious and safe and to oversee regulation of the food industry; this course aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to be able to that.

This is a top-up course which allows students from a suitable Diploma qualification in the area of Food and Nutrition to study at level 3 and obtain a Bachelor of Science in Food and Nutrition.

We currently have a progression agreement with Hong Kong University SPACE for students with the Higher Diploma in Nutrition and Food Management to transfer to our Food and Nutrition BSc (Hons) Top Up course.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

In this Top Up year you will start to apply your knowledge in the area of Food and Nutrition to case studies based on real life and current issues in nutrition and public health promotion, food safety and inspection and industrial analysis. You will also carry out an independent research project.

The award of a Food and Nutrition BSc Top Up is conditional upon the student having passed the following modules:

  • 326BMS Independent Project in Biomolecular Science;
  • 313BMS Case Studies in Analysis;
  • 333BMS Food Safety and Inspection;
  • 306DT Public Health Nutrition;
  • 328BMS Integrated Topics in Nutrition, Food and Public Health;
  • Research Design for Biomolecular Science.

For Food and Nutrition BSc (Hons) Top Up, students must also pass:

  • 326BMS Independent Project in Biomolecular Science.
HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

Your course will be based on a series of lectures, with associated seminars, workshops and practical classes. In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: formal examinations 10%; coursework such as tests, essays & case studies 50%; practical or project work 15%; group work etc.7%; presentations, posters etc.18%.

Where possible assessments are designed to mimic ‘real life’ skills, such as case-studies, carrying out a food safety inspection or designing a public health intervention.

TEACHING CONTACT HOURS

In a typical week you will have up to 18 contact hours. Your time will be split between lectures, seminars, practical classes. In addition you will be provided with guided study and there will be an expectation of students to undertake self-guided (independent) study.
