Who is this course for?
This course is for you if you are interested in learning the basic cooking methods & knife skills for an introduction to the catering industry.

What are the entry requirements?
You will have an Assessment & interview, literacy skills & you are required to be working in the catering field to undertake this course.
After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable for your needs and abilities.
    • Minimum Literacy Level: Entry 3

      You can read longer pieces of writing and understand the main ideas without help. You can write longer pieces of writing of 100 words or more.
    • Minimum Numeracy Level: Entry 2

    You can work with numbers, symbols, and simple diagrams. You can add and subtract simple numbers and use simple fractions. You can use money, tell the time, measure things and know about squares, triangles and rectangles.


What qualification will I receive?
You will receive on completion of all course work NVQ Level 1 food preparation & cooking.

Where can it lead?
You can go on to study NVQ level 2 food preparation & cooking or employment.

What will I study?
Subjects you will study include all the basic aspects of cookery methods, health & safety, food hygiene & knife skills.

How will I be taught?
You will attend a theory session followed by a practical session & you will be required to complete some study at home. You are required to complete a portfolio of short answer questions, practical assessments & photographic evidence.

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed by practical observation sessions & underpinning knowledge questions set by the awarding body.

What support is available while I am on the course?
Students are supported by their tutor through the duration of the course. The College's extensive learning resources are available to all learners. There is substantial language support for students whose first language is not English.
