Forest Ecosystems: Dead Wood, Leaf Litter and Nutrient Cycling
FOREST ECOSYSTEMS: DEAD WOOD, LEAF LITTER AND NUTRIENT CYCLING

It is now widely acknowledged that a healthy functioning forest ecosystem depends to a large degree on the presence of significant volumes of standing and fallen deadwood, but has this newly-found enthusiasm for deadwood overshadowed another significant element of forest nutrient cycling: leaf litter?

This day-course explores and contrasts the roles of both by examining European forest management over several centuries, as well as the science of forest nutrient cycling, and looks at how this applies to current forest management in the UK.  We also examine the wisdom of forestry-derived biofuels, a field which is gaining popularity and is planned to expand hugely in the near future.

Current native woodland management best-practice will also be covered, and the day will include a local site visit.

The course begins at 10.30am and finishes at 4pm, with a break for lunch at 1pm.Please bring a note book, weatherproof clothes and sturdy footwear.
