Course structure:
South Tyneside College has a well-established music programme and the modules in this new Foundation Degree have been designed to maximise the skills which musicians find most useful when trying to establish careers as teachers, performers and facilitators.
In year 1, most of the course is based at South Tyneside College, but some parts may involve students going out to observe and participate in supported, music-related placements.
Seven modules are studied in total in year 1, five modules of 2 hours per week and 2 modules of 1 hour per week each. Because we are aware that most musicians will be working at the same time as studying, the delivery of the course should enable students to maintain their performance work without it affecting their studies.
However, students should be aware that each module carries a large number of 'self-study' hours, where they will be expected to research and develop their work.
The

7 modules in year 1 reduce to

5 in year 2 and a 'double credit' module enables students to negotiate a project based on their strengths and interests.
In year 2, the focus also changes to independent working. Whilst students still develop their skills in 5 module areas, projects are less supported by formal lessons and are designed to encourage individuality and initiative.
The major, double credit module (Applied Music Project 2) brings together skills from across the course, enabling students to undertake a substantial creative project over a number of weeks.

Some students decide to continue their studies for a third year and 'top-up' their qualification to a full BA Honours Degree. You may wish to take advantage of South Tyneside's recognised progression route with the University of Sunderland and progress to the third year of a BA (Hons) Degree; or you may decide to study further afield for your final year - the choice is yours.
