Foundation Degree Computing

The Foundation Degree (FdSc) Computing programme has a strong practical focus. It covers key computing skills and specialisms and will prepare you for a broad range of careers in computing, with the ability to explore both networking and web design specialisms. It is ideal for anyone who wishes to progress into a career or self-employment or a full Honours Degree in Computing or a related subject.

The programme is designed so that students have the flexibility to transfer to the FdSc Computing (Networking) or FdSc Computing (Web Design) if they compete the required modules for the alternative pathway.
Award title: FdSc Computing.

Awarding body/institution: University of Portsmouth.

The awarding body for the Foundation Degree is the University of Portsmouth (subject to validation) and Highbury College is the provider of the course of study.
Teaching: A combination of lectures, seminars, workshops, online learning and weekly tutorials. Time spent on work placements is in addition to this time in College.

Independent study: You will need to undertake significant independent study outside of taught sessions. For every 1 taught hour students should spend at least 1.5 hours studying independently away from College, equating to at least 24 hours per week in Year 1 and 18 hours per week in Year 2.

Achievement: The Foundation Degree is achieved by passing all modules (240 credits).

Assessment methods: Assessment is on a continuous basis with up to two assignments in each module. Assessment is mainly via coursework which takes a variety of forms including timed examinations, written reports, presentations, and written reflections.

Staff: Full-time, part-time and associate lecturers (corporate associates) may teach on the Foundation Degree programme. Staff teaching on the programme have a variety of commercial/industrial and/or teaching experience in the field of computing.
