Course programme

Course content:

The FdSc is a modulised programme which will involve participation in practical sport, along with the study of a range of sport disciplines such as coaching, sport psychology, anatomy and physiology, biomechanics and sport sociology. The interdisciplinary nature of the course requires the application of theoretical knowledge to real life sporting situations and scenarios.

The FdSc Sport, Performance and Exercise Development is designed to produce knowledgeable and vocationally capable students through a range of work based and work related learning opportunities. Graduating students will have the option of finding relevant employment in the sport sector or progression onto the BSc (Hons) Sport Development and Coaching at the University of Lincoln

All applications are given full consideration on a case by case basis, however to maximise your progression on the course we recommend that applicants will have either

  • 120 UCAS points from related FE programmes.
  • Pass profile in a related National Diploma.
  • NVQ 3 in a related discipline.
  • Significant interest or industry experience in sport, coaching or exercise.

Progression & AssessmentAssessment and Progression:

Various learning styles are accommodated through formal lectures, theoretical and practical seminars, laboratory work, tutorials, work-based learning, e-learning and independent study. Sport specific and transferable skills will be developed progressively throughout the course and a variety of assessment techniques, such as reports, presentations, demonstrations and work based assessments will also be used to develop a range of communication, delivery, data collection, analysis and interpretation techniques.

The vocational nature of the course provides training and qualifications considered necessary for a variety of sport related careers, which include sport management, leisure and other areas where sport, coaching and exercise is emphasised. Examples include sport development, coaching, gym / fitness instruction, sport laboratory technician, teaching (following further study) as well as the police and armed forces.

Progression onto degree study is available onto the BSc (Hons) Sport, Development and Coaching at the University of Lincoln.

2 years

The FdSc Sport, Performance and Exercise Development can be studied either as a full or part time course. Full time delivery usually consists, on average, 3 days per week at college allowing independent vocational study time at other times. Part time delivery will require 1 day per week at college plus independent study time. Individual units can be studied on a full cost, stand alone basis.
