Introduction:
Foundation Degrees are modern, vocational higher education qualifications which blend together academic study with hands-on work-based experience. This particular Foundation Degree has been developed to ensure a more collaborative and integrated approach for professionals working with Children & Young People (C&YP). It reflects the desirable outcomes we would hope to achieve for all children described in Every Child Matters: Change for Children. The programme is for those already working, or wishing to work in education or social care environments.

Study Mode & Location:
This course is available as a full-time course over 2 years, or as a part-time course over 3 years. It will be held at Preston College, Fulwood Campus, St Vincent`s Road, Preston, PR2 8UR.

Course Content:
Whether you follow the full time or part time route, you will study 12 modules.

Students on the full time programme are expected to undertake 2 days per week in placement/employment. Those following the part time route will be expected to work 1 day per week in placement/employment. Please note days in College may change each year.

The degree is therefore suitable for a broad range of aspiring and qualified professionals including, Nursery Managers, Teaching Assistants, Health & Social Care and Early Years Practitioners, Children's Centre Employees including extended learning support workers in a variety of settings.

For those employed in education and care environments, this Foundation Degree is designed to support your career progression and equip you to work at a more advanced level. For those who are not employed, this degree does not at the present time offer you a licence to practice. Therefore, students entering the programme with A Levels and/or relevant experience should recognise that they need to study an appropriate Level 3 (Advanced) qualification alongside this Foundation Degree if they are seeking careers in education and care.

Assessment:
Each module will be assessed in a variety of ways including written essays, presentations, case studies, reports and practical activities.

Careers & Progression Opportunities:
Successful completion of this course allows progression to Year 3 of the following courses at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan):

BA (Hons) Degree in Education

BA (Hons) Children Schools and Families

Obtaining an Honours Degree can also enable progression to the MA in Social Work. Progression to these courses is considered on an individual applicant basis by UCLan.

Funding through LCC (Lancashire County Council) may be available for early years candidates subject to eligibility.

Requirement
Potential students must be aged 19 or over, meet the College`s minimum entry requirements for higher education courses and have GCSE or equivalent in English Language. The course is for: those already employed in education and/or care settings. those wishing to study full time who have previously followed a related National Diploma or NVQ course. those with A Levels and/or relevant experience. Places will be offered subject to a satisfactory interview and a short written analysis of a current article (undertaken at interview).
